April Showers and Awesome Students

I love my job!  Each day I get to work with wonderful kids.  I watch them grow taller, brighter, and more excited about learning each day.  This week, I want to share some of the fun moments that make my job so terrific.  On Monday, we had free writing.  The students had to write a sentence about any topic they wanted.  One young man wrote about the periodic table!  Then he drew a picture of the elements' symbols to match.  I was so impressed, I was almost speechless!  On Tuesday, another young man told me of his plan to get a pet raccoon.  He explained that his mother didn't want one, but he thought it was a great plan, anyway.  He had decided that if the family bought a raccoon, it would eat all the trash and they would never have to take out the garbage again!  That sounds pretty tempting for cold mornings lugging the trash to the curb.

This week we took a math test on Chapter 8.  Tomorrow/Monday we will begin a chapter on 2-D shapes.  We will focus on rectangles, squares, circles, hexagons, and triangles.  These are the five 2-D shapes students must know before the end of the school year.

In literacy, we had fun reading Max Takes the Train.  In this funny book by Rosemary Wells, Max wants ice cream so badly that he travels by bus, train, ferryboat, plane, and subway to get some.  But, when he can't finish it, his sister rides her bike to the ice cream shop to meet him!  We had great discussions about transportation and different ways people get from place to place.  The students also practiced their spelling skills, writing sentences, and identifying sounds in words.  We have had a busy, but fun, week in room 201!
